The Ministries of Environment and Power have directed the CPCB to evaluate the relevance of FGD (Flue Gas Desulfurisation) systems in Indian coal-fired thermal power plants.

This follows a joint meeting where studies by IIT Delhi, CSIR-NEERI, and the National Institute of Advanced Studies, Bengaluru, recommended against FGD installation.

The reports cite low sulphur content in Indian coal, compliance with National Ambient Air Quality Standards, and minimal impact on PM reduction.

The industry argues for scientific efficacy and a targeted strategy focusing on high-efficiency electrostatic precipitators instead.
