India, the world’s second-largest crude steel producer, made a bold move on April 21, 2025, by imposing a 12% tariff on steel imports to tackle a flood of cheap shipments, mainly from China.
This safeguard duty, effective for 200 days, aims to protect local mills facing scaled-down operations and potential job cuts.
China, the second-biggest steel exporter to India after South Korea, has contributed to a nine-year high of 9.5 million metric tons in imports during 2024/25.
Steel Minister H. D. Kumaraswamy called it a vital step for fair competition.
